How can what you eat impact different areas of health?

Are you worried about your health? Well, it’s true what they say. You are what you eat. [Why does this phrase always make me think of the jolly green giant?!]. This means that you need to be careful about what you consume because it can have a real impact on your wellbeing. Let’s explore some key examples of how certain food can change your health and wellbeing completely.

Your Teeth

Did you know that the foods you eat can have a massive impact on your teeth? Crunchy food really tests the strength of your molars as these are the primary teeth used for chewing. Then there are foods of certain colors that are more likely to stain your teeth. Things like coffee have a reputation for causing discoloration of teeth, and that is why it’s recommended that you’re careful with how much you consume, or at the very least, use a straw.

As well as this, there are little bits of food that can get stuck between your teeth, which is why it’s so important that you are brushing and flossing on a regular basis. If you don’t do this, then the food can end up rotting if it’s not removed, causing infections in your gums. You will then have to see a dentist to get rid of this, and a dental hygienist going forward to help ensure this doesn’t happen a second time.

Your Brain

You should think about the impact the food has on your brain and consider your emotions. Like drugs, certain food can alter your emotions completely. It can make you more irritable or even make you feel more depressed overall. It all depends on what food is part of your diet and how much you are consuming on a regular basis. For instance, chocolate will often provide a high similar to the feeling of love and then a low. Too much sugar will do the same thing. That’s why if you have a sweet tooth you should carefully manage how much you are eating on a daily basis. You need to cut your sweet treats down as much as you can.

Next, you should consider the foods that can have a positive impact on your health. An example would be antioxidants. Oxidation is the process which causes a variety of negative issues. Indeed, research suggests that it can lead to the degradation of gray brain matter which results in cognitive decline. Antioxidants found in various fruit and veg can reduce the impact of oxidation on the body. This is why it’s important to eat a balanced diet.
