The kitchen is the heart of the home | Is yours child-friendly?

When you have kids, everything changes – and unfortunately your house is no exception. While you might have been all about the perfect interior, that’ll soon change. Once those little bundles arrive, you’ll find yourself veering towards furniture because it’s practical; goodbye walk-in wardrobe and hello playroom and hidey holes, and anything else to keep your kids happy in the home

On the surface, you may argue that a kitchen should remain child-free; there are knives and bleach around and noone wants to have a knife throwing toddler around or finding one glugging bleach from the bottle. If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably spend a large amount of your time here and I bet the kids aren’t far behind you. You may want to contact companies such as https://www.wefixonline.co.uk/kitchens/ and book in for a few child-friendly alterations who may be able to advise on things such as…

A breakfast bar
Breakfast bars are an easy and convenient way to keep an eye on kids while you’re cooking or they’re eating. We used to have a breakfast bar and it did create a real sociable atmosphere – whilst Sofia used to have her dinner at around 5pm, we would be cooking ours so although we weren’t all sat around we were all in the same room!

A hob big enough for everyone
Depending on the size of your family and the various meal requirements, cooking one meal each night tends to go out the window when you have kids. As can be seen from this post at https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk, three quarters of families require more than one meal each night. Aside from being a pain, this can be impossible if you’re working on a four-ringed hob – you can’t cook what you don’t have room for.

A double sink
While we’re on the subject of making things bigger, you may also find that it’s worth splashing out on a double sink. Getting kids to wash their hands is hard enough, without making them wait for the privilege. By installing a double sink, two kids can easily wash side by side. That makes it more likely they’ll get into the habit, and that could make you a happy mummy. All because you did a little work on the kitchen!
